About the Show

Two men. One dream. No chance. In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new project – a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johannes Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract – fulfilling their wildest dreams…

The uproariously funny Gutenberg! The Musical! reunites Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells back on Broadway, 11 years after audiences first fell in love with them in their breakout Tony-nominated roles in The Book of MormonAlex Timbers, the Tony-winning director of shows like Moulin Rouge!, Beetlejuice and Oh, Hello On Broadway, directs this beloved duo in the Broadway premiere of this cult classic musical. Anthony King and Scott Brown originally developed Gutenberg! The Musical! at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 2003, where it ran for over a year and subsequently became UCB’s first off-Broadway commercial transfer. Following a sold-out engagement in London in 2006, Gutenberg! The Musical! had another 6-month off-Broadway run, again garnering rave reviews. We are thrilled to bring this deliciously irreverent comedy to Broadway and its biggest audience yet.

About the Theatre

James Earl Jones Theatre

138 W 48th St
New York, NY 10036

The Cort Theatre was built as a venue for producer John Cort’s productions in the early 1900’s.  Peg o’ My Heart was its premiere performance in 1912.

The Shubert Organization eventually took ownership of the venue and had it completely restored. The theater was renamed in honor of James Earl Jones in 2022.
