About the Show

Hadestown poster, Orpheus and Eurydice holding each other

Winner of 8 2019 Tony Awards including BEST MUSICAL!

Welcome to HADESTOWN, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.

HADESTOWN intertwines two mythic tales – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and faer against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

About the Theatre

Walter Kerr Theatre

219 W 48th St
New York, NY 10036

The Walter Kerr Theatre was originally opened in 1921 as The Ritz, and was intended to be a sister theater to The Ambassador Theatre.

CBS and ABC used the theatre to record radio and TV programs beginning in 1939. The theatre was converted to a movie theater in the 1970s but was restored to legitimacy in 1983. In 1990 millions were spent by its current owners, Jujamcyn Theatre, to restore this historic theatre. The Walter Kerr has housed successful runs ever since.
