About the Theatre

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

302 W 45th St
New York, NY 10036

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre was originally built in 1924 as a vaudeville stage for promoter Martin Beck and aptly named the Martin Beck Theatre. The Beck was the only theatre in New York to be owned outright without a mortgage. The theater was purchased by Jujamcyn Theaters in 1965 from the Beck family.

In the summer of 2003, it was announced that the Martin Beck Theatre would be renamed in honor of Broadway caricaturist and illustrator Al Hirschfeld to commemorate his 100th birthday.
