BroadwayGPS President Pat caught three shows this week – see her thoughts on Stranger Things, Floyd Collins and Pirates!
The three shows above couldn’t be more different, but each one stands out as spectacular (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), stunningly moving (Floyd Collins) and hilariously entertaining (Pirates! The Penzance Musical). All three productions are wildly different yet equally rewarding and should be excellent choices for groups whether students or adults. They were seen within the span of a week and we can’t begin to tell you how much pleasure and excitement all three generated.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is the most nominated play of the season — truly a jaw-dropping spectacle. Inspired by the Netflix series that takes place in 1959, the stunning special effects, fantastic performances and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this gripping adventure will take you places you’ve never experienced before. Truly a landmark production and a terrific group choice.
You’ll never find a bigger contrast to Stranger Things than Floyd Collins starring Jeremy Jordan as a 1925 Kentucky cave explorertrapped underground with only very occasional contact with the outside world. It’s a brilliant production, a gorgeous score and magnificent performances by a stellar cast, Jeremy Jordan challenges himself vocally and physically in his spellbinding performance. Highly recommend this show to groups of all ages.
Then the icing on a very rich cake – Pirates! The Penzance Musical! I think the critics say it best: “Effervescent, gorgeously sung, and hysterical. These days onBroadway, that is a glorious thing.”(NY Post) and“Makes you immediately want to see the production again.” (Variety). Among the many highlights is David HydePierce singing “I Am The Very Model of a Modern Major-General- one of the great patter songs of all time. The fun, nonsensical show with a light plot and a big happy ending help make the show a real joyous treat. Gilbert & Sullivan would be proud of this delightful production. Terrific group show for all ages.
