You don’t want to miss Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit who have taken over the roles of Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd in Stephen Sondheim’s glorious musical, Sweeney Todd. And if you thought you’d seen this production already, think again! BroadwayGPS returned to see the musical in its new glory, and below are our thoughts!
When Sutton Foster first made her entrance, the entire audience went berserk; we haven’t seen anything like this in a very long time. Having just completed a star turn in Once Upon a Mattress at City Center (during which she was rehearsing for Sweeney Todd during the day and performing in Mattress at night!), Ms. Foster bounded on stage with her mega-watt presence lighting up the entire theatre while taking the show to an even higher level and never descending for a moment. Her intricately layered performance is so chock-full of wonderful, nuanced choices, one would think she’d been doing the part for months. After the performance, the stage door must have had 100 excited fans, all waiting for a very accommodating pair of performers to greet them. We’ve booked a lot of groups to Sweeney Todd since it opened last year with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford and should see group sales continue with these two extraordinary Broadway performers.
Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit perform through May 5th. Group minimum 10!
