BroadwayGPS at EVERY BRILLIANT THING Invited Dress

Our team got a chance to see Daniel Radcliffe’s star turn in EVERY BRILLIANT THING. See our rep James’ experience below:

“I knew practically nothing about this show going in, and I think that made it considerably more fun! Just by luck of the draw, they sat me right in the front and center; the first few rows of the Orchestra section have been removed and there’s on stage seating on all sides. Daniel Radcliffe is on stage as soon as the house opens and greets audience members as they come in; a handful of people close to the stage are asked if they’d like to participate by doing “something” over the course of the show. They are given a little card with some information on it, and Radcliffe will tell you what you’re going to do and when it’s going to happen. So lucky me, I was one of the ones who got a card! Mine only involved standing up and reading off a line at one point, but it was extra special to be involved. About 3 or 4 people sitting on the stage had more involved “roles” over the course of the show, occasionally standing in to represent different characters. All this to say, to anyone nervous about the “audience participation” aspect, you’re asked right up front if you’re up to participate and you’re free to say no if you don’t want to; at one point there’s a line that the entire audience says in unison, but that’s it in terms of anything being mandatory. You won’t be pulled up onto the stage if you don’t want to be!

The show itself is a one-man narrative about his experience growing up with a mother who suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts, how he developed depression as he grew into adulthood, and how he created a list of “every brilliant thing” in response to it. It sounds like heavy subject matter, and it is, but it’s an incredibly fun show nonetheless with an uplifting final note. Radcliffe puts on a powerhouse performance, not only in terms of sheer physical endurance (at some point or other during the show he makes his way to just about every corner of the theater), but in the level of improvisation and on-your-feet thinking that clearly must happen at every show depending on how the participants from the audience engage with him.

It may not be typical tourist fare, but I do think it has broad appeal. Radcliffe is of course delightful and charming (and famous), and the show manages to deftly handle the serious subject matter while being thoroughly entertaining and a great time at the theatre. There’s a some mild PG-13 innuendos here and there, but nothing wildly inappropriate. It might be a little heavy for very young audiences, but I do believe groups of all ages and backgrounds would really enjoy this show.
