BroadwayGPS was invited to the newly renamed Todd Haimes Theatre (formerly the American Airlines) for Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play Doubt. Featuring performances by Academy Award and Tony nominee Amy Ryan and Tony winner Liev Schreiber as Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn, this riveting new production affirms this play’s standing as one of the great masterworks of the American canon.
Tyne Daly, originally cast as Sister Aloysius, had to step down from the show a mere week before the production opened on Broadway. At the first performance, the director Scott Ellis came down to the front of the house before the show to make an announcement. He let us know that Tyne Daly was home from the hospital and doing fine, and that Amy Ryan, who had just stepped into the role, may have a script on stage from time to time. But despite that announcement, BroadwayGPS didn’t spot a script on stage at any time! So it was incredibly impressive to see Amy Ryan taking on such a mammoth role on such short notice and being – at least from what we could tell – entirely off book. Quite a feat!
While musicals are fantastic, groups should go see more plays. And this is one not to miss!
What groups would like Doubt? Adult groups and high school groups that are aware of the darker subject matter. This would be great for a drama group!
Doubt plays a limited run on Broadway, recently extended to April 21, so book your tickets today!
