Nicole Scherzinger gives a “once in a generation” performance!

“The current and daring Broadway revival of the 1990’s Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Sunset Boulevard, takes its source material and turns it on its head to tremendous effect.  It plays less like a mega-musical of yesteryear and more like a classic Hitchcock film. The use of cameras and projections, although controversial these days, are incredibly well-used, allowing for close-up shots that drive home the film noir stylings. This Sunset Boulevard paints a world that is isolated, bleak, and cold, as if we’re experiencing the story from inside the rapidly declining mind of Norma Desmond. And speaking of Norma Desmond… it’s impossible to talk about this production without talking about Nicole Scherzinger. I’m not quite sure what words can properly drive home that this is one of those “Once In A Generation” performances that people are going to be talking about for years. Both of her big numbers in Act 1 and Act 2 received mid-show standing ovations — a response that was genuinely earned. With Audra McDonald soon starring in Gypsy across the street, it’s going to be a helluva Best Actress in a Musical race at the Tonys this year!

Positive word of mouth has already spread for this show resulting in broad appeal to adult and PG 13 student groups looking for a little edgier fare (there’s some language and violent imagery but it’s more impressionistic than overtly graphic). It’s definitely a show I’d recommend to anyone coming into the city soon!” – James, BroadwayGPS Staff
