Curtain Up! The Majestic Returns with GYPSY!

Curtain up on the newly renovated Majestic Theatre!

And majestic it is with a sumptuous interior of new carpets, new seats, new expanded bathrooms (40 percent increase!), dazzling lighting, and ample backstage area along with a restored exterior marquee.  It’s been a work in progress for months after Phantom of the Opera closed after 35 years as a tenant. The chandelier had been in storage for the renovation and is now polished and hanging in the auditorium of the Majestic (sans ghosts). So out with the old and in with the new! The Majestic will be home to the exciting new Gypsy revival starring the wondrous Audra McDonald directed by five-time Tony winner, George C. Wolfe.  Ms. McDonald made her 1991Broadway debut across the street in The Secret Garden and says she’s been dreaming of playing Mama Rose in Gypsy for as long as she can remember.

This Gypsy will have the full orchestra as originally scored – a rarity these days. And BroadwayGPS got a sneak peak (below) at the soaring sounds with a special Orchestra performance of the overture on stage! Gypsy should prove to be a big event for Broadway – a landmark theatre housing a landmark musical with Broadway legends – George C. Wolfe and Audra McDonald

Performances of Gypsy begin November 21 with an opening night of December 19.  Not to be missed!
