BroadwayGPS is in awe of this gem of a new musical!
Our colleague James had the pleasure of seeing Maybe Happy Ending during previews, and can’t wait to share the experience with you below:
“I’ve seen a lot of musicals in NYC in the time that I’ve lived here: Some good ones, some not-so-good ones, a few terrible ones and a few brilliant. But it’s a rare experience to see a show that leaves you with a genuine sense of awe. Maybe Happy Ending is one of those rare shows, a surprise gem of this Broadway season that’s so well-crafted and expertly pulled off that I walked out of the theater thinking “How did they DO that?” And I’m still sitting with the same question nearly a week later.
There are so many impressive things about Maybe Happy Ending but perhaps most impressive of all is the sheer scope and economy of its world-building. In a breezy 90 minutes, Maybe Happy Ending manages to create a rich and complex world. The story, set in Korea in what is implied to be several centuries in the future, centers around a pair of humanoid androids – known as “Helper Bots” – as they seek to confront the possibility of their own robotic mortality. Where other musicals of late have tried for emotional relevancy by way of vocal acrobatics, Maybe Happy Ending packs an emotional wallop with elegance and quiet simplicity.
The score (music by Will Aronson, lyrics by Hue Park) is one of the smartest and most sophisticated I’ve heard on Broadway in years. Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, starring as our robotic protagonists Oliver and Claire, deliver outstanding performances that are in equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking, and – funnily enough for a pair of androids – human. I could go on and on raving about this show, but for now I’ll leave it at this: Add Maybe Happy Ending to your Broadway must-see list!”
And the critics agree!!!
“Astonishing, joyful, heartbreaking, cutting-edge, and brilliantly executed.” – The New York Times
“Utterly enchanting! The fact that this show is casting its firefly glow on Broadway at all feels like a gift.” – TimeOut
“Definitely a big hit! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” – The Washington Post
