There’s a new Gatsby in town!
You may be familiar with the production of Gatsby currently playing on Broadway with Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada. But did you know there is another version of Gatsby potentially making it’s way to Broadway? This exciting new production puts a darker spin on the classic novel and boasts music by Florence Welch and direction by Rachel Chavkin (award winning director of Hadestown.)
Dana our Sales Associate at BroadwayGPS got invited to see it at the American Repertory Theater during the out of town tryout. See her thoughts below!
“Last month I had the opportunity to head to Boston to see A.R.Ts production of GATSBY! And this is not your old-school Gatsby. It was sexy. It had the glamour one associates with the story, but it was also extremely dark and put the focus on how flawed, privileged, and even -bad- these characters are (which was refreshing!) For the first time since reading the novel, I felt I could clearly see the inner workings of their mind…which is jarring and at times scary. Rachel Chavkin’s direction was nuanced. She set that tone from the beginning with the ensemble, clad all in black, tensely moving around the stage. She rarely misses, and I am excited to see this production move to a Broadway stage where the enormity of what she’s concocted has some space to breath. The music that Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett wrote, perfectly fit the tone – Florence’s signature “larger than life” sound mixed with jazzy undertones and poetic lyrics was a winning combo. Tied together with Sonya Tayeh’s sultry choreography and Alan C. Edwards’s mysterious lighting, A.R.T’s GATSBY leaves you 100% satisfied, albeit a bit disturbed. Which to me, is a ringing endorsement for any version of this story.”
