Chess and Ragtime hit Broadway this fall to much applause from audiences!
Staff members at BroadwayGPS recemtly attended the Broadway musical CHESS! Some had seen it in previous incarnations and for others it was their first time. The score has glued the show together for so many years. Not surprising since it’s the music of ABBA! The book, however, was always thought to be the hurdle to making the show a hit. Well, they’ve finally found a story that fits the scale and tenor of the music with a new book by Danny Strong, a writer who’s been obsessed with the Chess score for years. He brought the characters’ motivations while deepening their choices bringing the musical into a more relatable present day. The cast is outstanding with Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher all successfully giving their utmost to the story and their characters. Chess is a fitting show for the political scenarios we are living through today while offering humor and memorable music to uplift all spirits.
RAGTIME has audiences swooning! Not in recent memory have we heard such praise for a revival. Following three families in pursuit of the 20th Century’s “American Dream”, Ragtime incorporates fiction with historical events that resonate today. With music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Terrence McNally, the musical is based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctrow. Critics use words like: “Timely, Glorious, Transcendent, Exceptional, Thrilling!” to name but a few. The three disparate groups of people – white, middle-class Americans, a Jewish widower recently emigrated and an African American couple at the turn of the century all face the weighty issues of industrialization, immigration, class, racism and even the rise of unions. Ragtime is an American tapestry writ large! Due to the popularity, this has now extended thru June 2026! Don’t miss out on your tickets.
